What is Polymer Clay?

Polymer clay is a plastic modeling compound, that can be shaped into just about anything. Most people know polymer clay by its brand names: Sculpey, Premo!, Fimo, Cernit, Kato, as well as some others. To harden the clay, it is baked in a regular home oven. The hard clay can be carved, sanded, painted, drilled, buffed, and can have a varitety of surface finishes applied to it.

Terms you may see

Mokume Gane: A Japanese metal working technique that combines many different kinds/ colors of metals, fusing them together and creating a wood grain type of effect. In metal, this effect is beautifully decorative, and quite hard to do. This effect can be simulated by using multiple colors metallic polymer clays in a similar way as the metal and making a type of cane.

Mica Shift: Certain metallic or pearlescent polymer clays contain tiny flakes of mica, which give the clay its sparkle and metalic look. When these inclusions are lined up by rolling the clay through a pasta machine, the clay can be impressed causing the mica bits to shift angles. The raised edges can then be shaved off using a tissue blade until the clay is smooth again. A pattern will be left in the clay that appears dimensional, sort of like a hologram. The image in the clay is kind of like a bruse, and can then be removed by rolling it through the pasta macine again.

Magnetic Clasp Pacemaker Warning

I often use magnetic clasps in my jewelry. I have recently been told that magnets, even the tiny ones in jewelry can cause pacemakers to stop functioning. Please be aware, that if you have a pacemaker, you should not wear magnetic jewelry. If you are concerned about this, please talk to your physician. If you wish to buy a necklace with a magnetic clasp on this site, but you have a pacemaker, please contact me. I will be more than happy to change the clasp to either a lobster claw, or or spring ring clasp, without charge.

A note about my clasps, and jewelry findings

I generally don't use pure gold or silver findings in my jewelry, the descriptions of gold and silver are just for color. Some of my findings are plated, though. If you would like to know about the findings on a certain necklace, please feel free to contact me. All of my earring hooks are hypo-allergenic, and nickle free.
